For my senior thesis I'm illustrating myths from different cultures. These are color/value explorations for the home of a sad little creature from the backwoods of Pennsylvania called a Squonk. These poor creatures are hideously ugly, and spend most of their day crying about it (and keeping out of sight.)

I'm trying to work a little flatter than usual to show some range; I usually start pieces this way. I think staying in the ''blocking'' phase for a bit longer will save me from overworking pieces in the future. I'll have a finished version of this soon (with Squonk in it) along with a character study of Squonk himself.

So I wanted to do something that was shamelessly cute: it's a merbaby! It's a big contrast to what I'm currently working on for my thesis...some ugly, fearsome, Nordic Frost Giants. I designed this like a spot illustration for a chapter book, I'm very happy to be integrating text into my pieces.

The story is that our merbaby is the the long awaited heir to the thrown. The Sea King had only fathered mermaids, siren and other types of sea nymphs until that point. I didn't really think of much more of a story than though. After googling merbabies and merchildren, I was surprised that I didn't find a bigillion storybooks on the little guys.

It's a Ringling tradition that Senior Illustrators have to make a self-portrait for the poster promoting the Senior Thesis Show - this is mine. Their is no big concept in this, except that it is mostly made with Crayola Crayons...I'm very much in touch with my inner child. With crayon colors like macaroni and cheese, mango tango, and outer space, picking colors was never easier or more fun! Aside from Crayola Crayons I used: gouache, Sharpie, and did some light digital touch ups in Photoshop; I'm a big believer in mixed media.

I'm having a lot of fun with thesis, and I feel like I'm branching out from my same-old-same-old. Keep checkin' in or better yet "follow" me. I'll keep you guys posted.

Been working these two weeks as a PreCollege T.A. and I'm lovin' the energy on campus. I started painting over an old line drawing for a short impromptu demo - now that's gotten the ball rolling for me to finish this Don Quijote illustration. I keep trying to challenge myself with increasingly elaborate illustrations: this next one will have 4 figures going back in space - so that should be fun. After that I'm going back to traditional and doing simple spot illustrations with experimental media processes.

It's Tyra boys and girls and you better work it! This was mostly done tonight (i.e. last minute) but I'm happy with how it turned out. I kept showing this caricature to a bunch of people and, for a while, Tyra kept getting confused with a few other strong black women including but not limited to: Oprah, Whitney and Diana Ross...I'm not sure if the final is definitively Tyra... but it's the one that I'm handing in today.

Our assignment in Adv. Media was to do an illustration that incorporated three elements: a human, an animal (or creature), and a machine/device - the media had to be pen & ink. As you may have noticed from glancing at this blog, I'm not one of those guys that can whip-out amazing pen and ink drawings weekly in their sketchbooks, in fact, I avoid the media like the plague.

I'm thankful that my instructor, the wonderful Don Brandes, helped me out so much with linework issues (...to crosshatch or stipple, that is the question!) Now, me being me, I wanna start painting over this thing digitally as soon as Spring Break starts, get some color in there.

If you're wondering about the enigmatic tittle of this post, it's just the tittle of the illustration. *This is where I get artsy-fartsy* The piece is about what it means to be human, and the irony is that the robot is more passionate about life than his human master. Now, most people won't read into it so much, and I'm cool with that hahaha. Big props to upcoming computer animator Jon Flanders for posing!

This is a model sheet for my upcoming animatic - Cupid's Last Bow. This was so much fun to do and for once everything went smoothly from start to finish. It'd be nice to get paid to do these one day! Now I have to polish up some frames and pop them into Premiere, but that's not gonna happen until I get back to Ringling because I don't have no fancy editing software on my computer.

Although I worked hard on my Birth of Abstraction short, it's been kind of a disappointment. On the one hand, I got acclimated to the new software (Adobe Premiere) but aside from that, I disliked my own story, my character design, and my timing for the animation. But this next one is gonna be great I promise!! My heart is really into this one (pun sorta intended). Speaking of heart, I'd like to take a moment to thank the people that are near and dear to mine: my friends / models. They are the shit, real characters in their own right. So let's role the credits:

So I was tediously using Adobe Illustrator to draw a vectored perspective drawing in the computer labs when suddenly....a booming voice from the heavens said onto me:

"use Google Sketch Up!"

Okay, so it was really my friend and fellow Ringlinger Tyler Schatz, but his voice did startle me and he really was a godsend. The program is a very quick, user-friendly way to make geometric models of anything from a room to a city. It's easy to use from the getgo. I built a sloppy model of what I needed - nothing special - but I'll make good use of it in my Visual Development projects.

In heinsight, I should have sanded this (gessoed) canvas down. The canvas was originally a still life painting from sophomore year. The texture becomes distracting in the wrong light, and worst of all the mouth is situated right over what used to be the rim. I'm sorry if my blog feels like it turned into a portrait blog, I swear I'm an illustrator!! I'm just sitting on a bunch of things before I send them off through the blogosphere. I hosted to back-to-back Portrait Nights this week because of pure necessity to fill sketchbook pages; I think I might just keep it up since I feel weekday Portrait Nights are more practical than weekend Portrait Nights. I didn't like my Sunday drawings much, but since I started using a 6B pencil and a stub, I feel like I can get the effects of charcoal but with the control of graphite. These were all 15 minute poses.

Fear of Commitment

Our first Illustration assignment sophomore year was a black & white Phobia piece. It turned into an epic fail the first time around; but looking back, it was the concept/composition I was most proud of. So...I got proactive and finished it digitally because the canvas was too big to take home. I kept it in b&w because I wanted to really practice values and not get distracted by color.

Conceptually, I broke-down the Fear of Commitment into two fears: (1) the fear of loosing one's freedom, and (2) the fear of not really knowing your partner. The perspective is distorted because I was trying to compress/collapse space for psychological effect - for the most part I try to create believable space but for this one I wanted it to be a surreal/nightmarish environment.

I'm diving head first into my traditional media projects; don't wanna touch a Wacom pen for a good while hahaha

Been flipping back and forth through sketchbook pages, there's a lot more coming soon...

I want to point out that sandpapering your sketchbook is the shit! I tried it out because I had to smoothen the texture of an hour's worth of acrylic smudging. I liked the chaotic element of it and - if you change your mind a lot about colors like me - you also get a lot of different colors showing through. So click left and you'll the page right after it's sandpapered and click right to see me taking it nowhere after that. I came to terms with the head being bigger than the body.

Aside from sketchbooking, I got a digital illustration that shoooouuld be finished by this weekend, but don't count it against me if I slack off. Ringling is fast approaching so now is when the adrenaline of the fear of Pratt kicks in (it's like the fear of God, only praying doesn't help). I hope you are having a sweet ass summah vaca.

Jerry Portrait

No, it's not Jesus or Tarzan... This was supposed to be done for my friend Jerry's birthday last year, so it's either a really late present or I'm getting a heads up on his upcoming birthday. Anyways, I worked on it over Christmas break and on-and-off this summer.

I used Golden Open Acrylics the whole way, learned a lot. Now that I'm done with this, I want to do a series of very diverse portrait subjects (in terms of age and race.) Other stuff on my to-do list is an illustration for Illest. I started a landscape painting in El Morro; by now I've realized that landscape painting always attracts spectators, but in this big tourist spot it turns into a freakin' performance art! Last time there were about 20 people just 10 feet behind me scrutinizing my feeble attempts at starting a landscape. The little kids would just run up to me and start talking, which made me really miss working with kids. Anyways, I'll keep you guys updated on it and I'll try to make some sketchbook pages worth showing!!

Figure painting is one of the few things I am willing to wake-up at 8am for. the one below was done in Figure class, the one above was done in Painting class. I had a lot of fun drawing these ladies, I just wish I had more time with them. The top one was a 3-day pose, so my teacher encouraged us not to crop much of the form. The bottom one was a a 1-day pose. I (and my instructors) would have like to have seen then completely finished BUT there is a little part of my that like some qualities in half-finished paintings hahaha I can't put my finger on it but there is something very beautiful about the preliminary deconstruction of the form and color. I guess it's like my painting teacher, Robin Cody, says: it's economical. At least that's how I think she says it. Anywho, I'm gonna paint a lot of portraits and maybe some whole figures, it's up to my friend's back home...it takes a lot of time and patience to sit for a painting.

I'm happy to say I've been keeping a sketchbook this semester. It was required for Illustration and I am so glad it was because it pushed me to find new ways to approach a blank page. I messed around a lot with media and tested what works for me and what doesn't. Most of it is not "blogworthy", but I believe one of the major functions of a sketchbook is to do trial-and-error stuff, to fearlessly experiment and not play it safe. More Figure

We went out to go landscape downtown and I fell in love with this alley. I'll tweak it some more if I get the time this semester.

Figure class goes by a LOT faster now that I'm painting vs. drawing the model. These are my first in-class figure paintings; I didn't want to bite of more than I could chew so I did them monochromatically (I heart Burnt Umber). Next class I plan to do full color and if it's not an epic fail - I'll post it.

Branding!

Business card are hard to do. They're small, so they have to be simple; but they also have to represent you as an artist. I need my card to be a kind of "teaser" that will make employers want see this humble blog. So here it is in all its vectored splendor, my first business card:

Also as part of this branding project, we had to make custom envelopes, in case we ever needed to go old school and send a business It's all about sparking curiosity and people wanting to see more of your style. Finally, we had to make a letterhead with all our contact info.

Homework Figure Painting

Our Figure assignment was two have to figures interacting. We could use any media so I used Open Acrylics; I'm trying to get used to painting figures rather than drawing them. Trying to get a head start on next year when we take our first official figure painting course.

Usually in figure, we get a different model/pose every class. To mix it up, we've had a 3-day pose for the last week and a half. It's sweet to have more time; now I wanna get fast enough were I can get this much done in one class.

Last semester, we have to do two weekly master copies in our sketchbooks for Robin Cody's painting class. I got into them and out-of-them, it all depended on how hectic the week went. Here are the one's I deemed blogworthy.

Me and my friends named this sketchbook The Littlest Sketchbook because it's the smallest sized moleskin at the campus store. When closed, it's as smaller than your hand (well my man-hand anyways.) I enjoyed working in such a small skethbook because it didn't need a lot of paint to have a painterly feel and because I could do spreads easily. I normally don't like to work on just one page of a sketchbook, I prefer working the two pages together as a spread because it feels more like a canvas.

Experimental Perspective

Our Painting class was part of an exchange program with a school from Antwerp. The teacher (Tilda) wanted us to paint a room from our living space on campus. The twist was that you could not use linear/classical perspective - instead we had to be more expressive with our work while still conveying the idea of space.

The piece is about how different my roommate's workspace is from my own, accentuated by the change in temperature. I had a lot of fun with this and actually discovered some ways of handling paint that work for me - I'm also very happy with the colors. If you were wondering, my side is the right side with the huge Puerto Rican flag.

At Ringling, illustration students have to take a Intro to Graphic Design class so that we can be well-rounded freelance artists. For our first project we had to do fake buisness cards for famous people.

Force-fitting (and other concept exercises)

Concept 1 is a lot of fun. We've been generating character using exercises that stimulate our imaginations. This one was the product of Force Fitting (uniting two unrelated things), everyone had to fuse together an animal with a vehicle. I was assigned a killer whale and a hearse; below are the preliminary thumbnails and the final.

These bunch of characters where from our Texture exercise, we had to take photos of textures like bark, rocks, grass, walls, clouds etc. and find characters in them. It was hard to do them all in a week but I'm happy with how they turned out.

For my concept class, we had a week to create 100 interesting silhouettes (the foundation of character design.) We were encouraged to doodle and worry about creating interesting shapes instead of making something that looked recognizable.

What we were supposed to be aiming for is open ended silhouettes. Kind of get that feeling of looking at a cloud and seeing many different things. Some of the silhouettes you can't help but detail a bit more though, which is okay too. Although we were asked to make a hundred, we only take 3 silhouettes to the next phase. The great thing about this exercise though, is that you have a library of your own original character ideas.

Stuff I want to retouch...

This was my last illustration. The project was very open-ended: the illustration had to have these Five Elements: (1) human form, (2) animal form, (3) plant form, (4) object & (5) gesture. Our teacher said we could use hybrids like centaurs and such so I came up with this concept of two scandalous, gay chess kings. I'm going to completely change the landscape in the background of the sky + "flesh out" the characters more and clean up the drawing.

This was the famous Every Hair on the Dog project from Media class; you have to paint virtually every hair of an animal in acrylic.

MEDIA PROJECTS

Oil Rub
An oil rub is a mixed media method with a funny name. Here's what you do:
(1) Spray-fix graphite drawing
(2) Smear oil paint over it and rub-out highlights
(3) Use colored pencils for further value adjustments and color
(4) Finish it off with acrilic in the lightest lights

We had to do a classmate for a watercolor portrait so I did my roommate and platonic life-companion Matt Buck. He's the shit at drawing shit naked.

First Week Back

Looks like an incredible year ahead - a schedule stuffed with classes and an appartment full of art shit. I can see improvement from last year but I'm still not happy with my work. I've been much better at keeping a sketchbook this year. There are a lot of amazing Ringling sketchbooks out there, I just had to come to terms with mine not being one of them - right now mine mostly has doodles and notes. Recently I've been experimenting with brush pens (thanks to Media class) and I've enjoyed it a lot. Here's some of that plus the outcome of a Portrait Night.

Sketchbook drawing I did in Board's Anatomy night-class...Buck made the valid point that Anatomy is the class where your drawings SHOULD look like dry studies (and I kind of failed at that but I'll keep it in mind next time.) Storyboarding

Been productive this month - did about 45 frames in one weekend! I'm working in Young & Rubicam (in Puerto Rico) and I did 9 storyboards for a certain cellphone company (all I can say is 'magenta'). What you are seeing is not a storyboard, it's just random frames from different boards that don't give away too much of the situations. They made animatics for 3 of them and I almost cried of joy when I saw my frames in "motion" on the DVD with a voiceover narration.

Beach Entities of Puerto Rico

Just a series of photos I did one day at the beach. These three merchants are ALWAYS there, they have become iconic for me and for anyone who frequents the beach. I kept the faces out because that makes them more legendary. No one really remembers their faces, yet they are very memorable - that fascinates me, I want to eventually do characters like these guys, they kind of remind me of Legend of Zelda merchants. One of the merchants sells drinks (vende-bebidas), one sells native ice creams (el heladero), and one sells "empanadillas" (breaded meat, fish etc), he is by far the loudest. I firmly believe that photography is a very effective way to practice composotion and placement, it's one of the reasons I like to photograph so much.

Road Trip: TINAJAS!

I'm planning a road trip with a big group of my high school classmates; it's good to see that somethings never change. Anyways we're going to Tinajas River. It has this awesome spot where a waterfall has made natural waterslides. Also, people cliff jump all the time. I can't wait to go with the friends I grew up with. For everyone who's never heard the phrase:
This was something the older generation told young women when they were dating. If you have sex with him now he’ll never marry you. 'Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?' A Machiavellian male might tell another, Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?, to justify sexual exploitation. There were older women who said the same thing to younger women as a warning against giving away what a man would have to pay for with marriage.

Work from my Sajo-García & Partners Internship (2007)

Last summer I had a great opportunity to work for a prominent local agency and do various projects for them. I doubled as a graphic designer, learned a LOT. One of the major projects I did was a shirt for the government abstinence campaign – La Otra Cara del Sexo (The Other Side of Sex.) The Mayan-inspired maze ends with the text "I'm not easy."

I did some concept art for reggaeton superstars Wisin & Yandel’s music video, Delirando. None of these concepts were picked up though – it happens. The first one was an Arabian Night theme, the second is a parody of a Novela, with the humble maid being the center of the men's infatuation.

This is another concept that didn’t go to final; it was for the bathroom signs of a pretty fancy Spanish restaurant in Old San Juan. These drawings would have been printed in parchment - Don Quijote on the men’s restroom, and Sancho Panza (in drag) on the women’s restroom.

Interns do a lot of pro-bono work; I was in charge of La Fondita de Jesús, a local homeless shelter complex. A restaurant chain in Old San Juan allowed us to put this donation sheet in their customers’ bill presenter (the black portfolio where you receive the bill for the meal.)

On the Island

Did this one almost a year ago, got this model to come to my house and pose for me. The drawing went a lot smoother after we broke the ice and started talking.

Last Saturday I went to the local art college (La Escuela de Artes Plásticas) for a Figure Class. The class consisted of two other guys beside me and one very young female teacher who had very limited knowledge about anatomy. For some reason, the school prefers its pupils draw the figure in ambient light vs. dramatic light. The class didn't have music and the instructor didn't comment once on my piece. It's sad how the arts aren't nurtured here in Puerto Rico. I seriously want to do something about that in the future, maybe start my own school here when I retire.

A simple assignment: update one of Francisco Goya's Caprichos. I chose this one of the series, Nadie se conoce, which translates to "Nobody Knows Each Other." Goya chose to illustrate the masquerade of life literally; I thought the modern-day equivalent would be the avatars we create for ourselves in cyberspace.

A shirt I did for my high school's Futsal Tournament (indoor soccer); shirts were sold for eight dollars each. They sold out pretty quickly which left me very happy although I didn't get any money for the shirts.

The one below was a logo I made to promote my farewell dinner. It was completely unnecessary but, then again, most art is.
